The architects Herman Verkerk and Paul Kuipers designed a gently rising terraced landscape: a hill surrounded by islands with varied vegetation. In collaboration with Feddes Olthof Idyll The Mountain became also a steppingstone in the national ecological network. The route over the hill offers the experience of time slowing down. The narrowing of the perspective emphasizes the reflective, introverted character of the place. Once at the top, there are sightlines to the landscape. Along the route lies a long, sloping wall constructed from stacked, reused paving slabs. Niches have been created in the wall for the placement of urns. These are covered with a natural stone slab. Mosses and plants can grow in the cracks and holes in the wall.
One of the islands along the Linge forms the entrance to the site. On the entrance island stands a gate overgrown with wild honeysuckle. The gate marks the entry to the Idylle and also serves as a picnic spot. Glacier stones with a smooth upper surface invite visitors to sit, and scattered around the gate. A wooden bridge connects the entrance-island to the hill-island.
